🐾🌿 : The advice that's working against you


Hi Reader,

You know that feeling when you hire someone to help with marketing, and the first thing they suggest is a countdown timer?

Or a "limited spots available" message. For work that genuinely protects ecosystems.

I've been in marketing since 1991. I know how these tactics work. I don’t use them because I could see what they cost, in trust, in alignment, in what they do to the relationship between a brand and its audience.

The standard playbook was built to sell more of everything.

That's a direct conflict when your brand exists to restore habitat, reduce extraction, or prove that nature-positive business is real business.

The tactics causing the most damage aren't the obvious ones. They're the ones that feel harmless because everyone else is using them.

Urgency. "Only 3 spots left." Countdown timers. FOMO-based email sequences. Flash sale framing applied to conservation work.

These tactics are designed to make people buy things they don't need in warp speed.

For a fast fashion brand, that's a strategy. For a nature-led brand, that's a contradiction your audience will notice before you do.

And it goes deeper than just those tactics.

FOMO-based marketing drives impulse decisions. Impulse decisions drive overconsumption. Overconsumption is literally the root of most of what we're working against.

You can't fight extraction with extractive tactics.

The brands getting visible for the right reasons right now are the ones whose messaging is honest, specific, and free of manufactured pressure.

That's not a moral stance. It's a strategic one.

Conscious clients, mission-aligned investors, and the people you most want to reach are some of the most manipulation-literate humans in any market. They've seen enough false urgency to spot it in the first sentence. And when they do, they leave quietly, without telling you why.

Your messaging is part of your impact. It always has been.
